Minty Fresh

Peppermint Essential Oil is has many wonderful uses. It is one you will often find in blends for things like arthritis, weight management, allergies, and digestive health and it is great for lip balms and soap scrubs. Some of which I will go over throughout this post.

The Young Living Essential Oil Pocket Reference book has an Appendix section and it identifies Peppermint Essential Oil has helping with (Not Curing – helping)
  • Nervous System
  • Respiratory System
  • Digestive/Elimination
  • Muscle and Bone
  • Oral Hygiene
  • Skin and Hair
The smell of Peppermint can be a bit strong so for those who are sensitive to the smell of peppermint I would really recommend testing your tolerance. A way I have tested peppermint tolerance is by putting 1 drop in my palm and gently inhaling. It will penetrate your eyes and might make them water a bit so ONLY ONE DROP to test if you are not sure.  I love the smell of it which is why I don’t mind using up to 2 drops. I will also mention that you do not want to get this oil in your eye and be mindful after rubbing it in or using it on your hand as you would not want to then rub your eye. I have personally done this and it is very unpleasant.

Lets start with something I constantly turn to Peppermint for, headaches. This is really easy and kind of a no brainer in my book. You simply take 1-2 drops of Peppermint oil with a carrier oil of your choice and rub it on your temples, back of your neck and I also rub it across my forehead, just above my brow line. I would definitely rub across your brow line (if you can) when it comes to tension headaches.

I can get extreme tension headaches and I made a blend that I have found does help:

10 drops each
Peppermint
Lavender
Frankincense

8 drops of Peace and Calming

Fill rest with carrier oil (I use Coconut Oil)
15ml bottle w/roller ball

Another great use is for arthritis or pain/discomfort brought on my similar conditions. It has a soothing sensation as well as an almost cooling feeling when applied topically. In my experience it is great coupled with Lemongrass (1-2 drops each) and coconut oil on my joints when your joints are stiff or feel swollen. In the articles I have seen it sounds like a lot of people like to use peppermint when layering oils for muscle or joint pain/discomfort.

Upset Yummy; regardless of why its upset, its unpleasant and we all want it to stop as fast as it can. At least that is how it works in my house. Now whenever I find I may be getting an upset stomach I will take 2-3 drops of Peppermint with a carrier oil of your choice and rub in on my stomach around by belly button. It is also great for when you find yourself with embarrassing gas or if you are starting to feel a bit nauseous. I find it takes about 15 minutes to truly take effect.  So for you ladies that want to ensure you remain dainty regardless what you eat, keep a little peppermint in your travel oil case or purse.

Don’t forget you can also use some of the Essential Oils for cooking. Peppermint is wonderful in teas. I have used it with Thieves and Lemon with chamomile when I have a sore throat or start to feel a little under the weather. It’s a wonderful addition. Peppermint is a great oil to use in drinks, be mindful the strength of these oils and start with only 1-2 drops and work your way up from there. It is much easier to add the hint of peppermint than it is to mask or remove it.
